Roe Reef, Rottnest Island

By ScubaDownUnder Team · 2026-09-27

Two miles off the north-east tip of Rottnest Island, a maze of limestone rises toward the surface, riddled with caves, windows and swim-throughs. Roe Reef is the island's signature dive, a honeycomb of pale rock and bright growth where schools of fish pour through natural arches and crayfish back into the dark. Warmed by the Leeuwin Current and washed by the clear water of the Indian Ocean, it is the dive that sums up why Rottnest, a short hop from Perth, is the best diving the city has.

Rottnest Island sits about nineteen kilometres off Fremantle, a limestone island ringed by reefs and bays that has long been Perth's favourite escape. Roe Reef lies around a mile and a half off the island's Bathurst Lighthouse, on the north-eastern end, an offshore limestone reef shaped over millennia into caves and arches. The warm Leeuwin Current, which runs down the Western Australian coast, brings tropical species south to mix with the local temperate fish, and the clear ocean water makes the reef's architecture the star of the dive.

Roe Reef is a dive of holes and passages. The limestone is cut with small caves at around fourteen metres, tight swim-throughs and a large arch on the western side, with the reef bottoming out around twenty-one metres. The pleasure of the dive is moving through the natural windows from one chamber to the next, over a garden of small corals and sponges, with light slanting through the openings. It is a fun, three-dimensional dive that suits a range of abilities, though the swim-throughs and the depth reward divers with good buoyancy and some experience. Because it is offshore, it is best dived when the swell is low.

The reef is full of life. Massive schools of western pomfret and western buffalo bream sweep over the limestone, wobbegong sharks rest in the caves, and stingrays and cuttlefish work the sand and ledges. The countless nooks and crannies shelter scorpionfish, bullseyes, catfish and the western rock lobster, the crayfish that the caves are famous for. Western blue groper patrol the reef, and the Leeuwin Current delivers tropical strays to mingle with the temperate residents. The combination of dense fish life and the limestone architecture makes Roe Reef as rewarding for the fish-watcher as for the diver who simply enjoys the swim-throughs.

Roe Reef offers the clear, mild water that makes Rottnest such a good destination. Visibility is generally good and best when the swell is low, often ten to twenty-five metres in the clean Indian Ocean water. Water temperature ranges from around 18°C in winter to 23°C in summer, warmed by the Leeuwin Current, so a 5mm wetsuit suits most divers. There are small currents around the reef, and the site is offshore and exposed, so it is dived on calmer days and reached by boat. The swim-throughs and caves mean a torch is useful and good buoyancy important, both to enjoy the architecture and to avoid damaging the growth.

Roe Reef is one of a cluster of excellent Rottnest dives, alongside the island's limestone reefs and shipwrecks, and a day trip from Perth or Fremantle can take in several. The caves and arches make it a favourite for photographers, who work the light through the windows and the schools of fish that gather in them. For Perth divers it is the standout local dive, close enough for a day trip yet offering the clear water, the structure and the fish life of a far more remote reef.

Roe Reef is the reason Perth divers do not envy the east coast. A limestone labyrinth of caves and arches, alive with fish and crayfish, in the clear warm water of the Indian Ocean a short boat ride from the city. It is Rottnest's finest dive, and proof that some of Australia's best diving sits right on Perth's doorstep.

## Site Access and Logistics

Roe Reef is a boat dive off the north-eastern end of Rottnest Island, around a mile and a half offshore from the Bathurst Lighthouse. Rottnest itself is about nineteen kilometres off Fremantle, reached by ferry, and the reef is dived by charter from the island and from Perth and Fremantle. There is no shore access to the reef.

The depth, to around twenty-one metres, and the swim-throughs and caves make Roe Reef a site best suited to divers with good buoyancy and some experience, though it is enjoyable across a range of abilities in good conditions. A torch helps in the caves and arches, a surface marker buoy is standard on the boat dives, and a 5mm wetsuit suits the water. Because it is offshore and exposed, the reef is best dived when the swell is low.

Dives and charters to Roe Reef and the other Rottnest sites are available through Rottnest and Perth operators, including [Samphire Rottnest](https://samphirerottnest.com.au/scuba-diving-rottnest/).
