Rottnest Island, WA
The reef averages 10-12 m with a maximum of 18 m, and caves, canyons, shelves and swim-throughs run right across the site, so a torch is worth carrying. The name comes from divers' bubbles rising through holes in the reef like crystals. Huge schools of buffalo bream, snapper, dhufish, western rock lobster, wobbegongs and Port Jackson sharks are the regulars, with turtles likely on night dives. It is a boat dive, usually reached on day charters from Fremantle.
Visibility at Crystal Palace typically ranges from 10 to 20 metres, though it shifts with swell, wind and recent rainfall. December to April generally offers the best conditions for diving here.
Right now: approximately 10 m, 98% confidence (updated 23:38 AEDT).
